If I Hear…

Matt Love NSP Meditations

Someone else use the phrase “mainstream media” to prove a point from any ideological perspective, I’m going to consider that person a complete non-started as a thinker. The phrase is meaningless.

Another sportscaster say “we need sports” as a distraction from the pandemic, I’m going to point to the Roman Emperor Nero, bread and circuses, the Fall of the Empire and the Dark Ages.

Yet another pundit utter the word “optics” to strengthen his/her opinion, I’m going to smash him in the glasses.

Another person tell me, “I’ll send a link to a video that will prove my point and that you’re wrong,” I’m going to say, “Sure, send me that link and the other links to videos that prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that:

The Holocaust didn’t happen.

The Earth is flat.

The Federal Reserve is illegal.

The federal income tax in unconstitutional and therefore voluntary.

Tupac is still alive pumping gas in Toledo, Oregon.

You’ll go blind if you masturbate (men only)

9-11 was an inside job.

Ronald Reagan is on Mt. Rushmore.

Jews run the world.

Rock and Roll isn’t dead.

Santa Claus exists.

Lewis and Clark were gay.

The sun revolves around the Earth.

Bloodletting actually works as a medical procedure.

Gravity isn’t real.

The moon shot was a hoax.

Mormon founder Joesph Smith once met Jesus in Cleveland.

Yeah, send those links along and be assured of your opinion even though you haven’t thought an original thought on the subject or know anything about it except the video. That’s what passes for your critical thinking. I’ve read over a hundred books on Constitutional history and law, got degrees in history and political science, taught the subject for years, seen my own Constitutional rights violated by the state of Oregon, been a card carrying member of the ACLU, followed the Supreme Court’s rulings since I was in high school…but you know more about the illegal federal income tax than I do! You don’t even know the number of the Amendment!

And if hear one more evangelist on radio, television or the internet who says the Bible is true because it’s in the Bible, I’m going to adopt The Lord of the Rings Trilogy as my sacred text and take it from there. And elves and dwarves are a lot cooler than Philistines and Pharisees.

Secret Coast Radio #20

Matt Love NSP Meditations, secret coast radio

Welcome to the Secret Coast Radio podcast broadcasting somewhere on the Secret Coast

Let us begin by saying:

We prefer the first person plural over the singular.

We prefer mystery over journalism, but also facts over conspiracies.

We prefer not “getting back to the way we were” because that way was killing the planet, degrading our minds and corrupting our souls.

We prefer writing erotica to writing lies and watching ospreys over seeing clearcuts.

We prefer flying with our minds to the peaks of majestic mountains than flying in airplane to Nepal to climb Mt Everest. There is no point to climbing Mt. Everest. There never was. Human hubris, that is all.

We prefer natural RAIN over human REIGN.

Just how many boats can you water ski behind? It’s the only question worth asking in America these days.

We prefer communing with our chipmunk friends over taking communion.

We prefer the word obtuse over optics.

We prefer governors who actually govern on behalf of all their constituents in times of crisis, and well all the time, over governing strictly on behalf of corporations and Chambers of Commerce.

We prefer bailing out rock and roll bands over airlines.

We wonder how the debasement of human beings on television shows became prime entertainment in America?

What is this podcast about? Who are we?

Like we said, mystery over journalism.

Let show number 20 begin.

A Modest Proposal in the Spirit of Tom McCall to Reopen Coastal State Parks

Matt Love NSP Meditations, Oregon Beaches, Oregon Coast_History Beach Bill, Tom McCall

(Please read if you care about Oregon’s ocean beaches, comment and share this proposal far and wide.)

I have a great notion how to reopen the state parks that provide access to Oregon’s greatest cultural asset, our publicly-owned ocean beaches, or the Great Birthright, as former Oregon Governor Oswald West memorably called them back in 1913.

This notion emerged on the beach while I was building a driftwood fort. The notion did not originate with me. I borrowed it from Oregon antiquity, the golden era of Tom McCall, the legendary, two-term, Republican Governor.

In 1973, after the Arab oil embargo, gasoline prices skyrocketed and led to long lines at filling stations across the country. If I recall correctly, one of McCall’s aides came up with the EVEN/ODD idea to end long gas lines lines in Oregon. The aide pitched the idea to McCall, he approved it, and announced it to the public. He apparently had no legal authority to do so.

The idea was: drivers with even-numbered license plates would buy gasoline on even-numbered days; drivers with odd-numbered license plates would buy gasoline on odd-numbered days. Simple. Brilliant. Non partisan. Didn’t cost the taxpayers a cent. McCall asked Oregonians to do the right thing and abide by the system for the greater good. They did.

It worked. It quickly became a model for the rest of the nation.

My notion is: drivers with even-numbered license plates could visit a coastal state park on even-numbered days; drivers with odd-numbered license plates could visit on odd-numbered days. People on foot visit on even-numbered days. Bicyclist get odd-numbered days. Those with vanity plates would add the total number of letters and numbers and that sum would determine EVEN/ODD status.

If visitors find a vehicle parked on the lot on the wrong day, (and of course they will) well, what would Tom McCall do? He would gently confront them and point out their selfishness. He would ask them to take the high road. Some would not, but he would keep asking.

I also propose that some video wizard find a clip of McCall speaking and repurpose it to have McCall making an address to the Oregon people about the EVEN-ODD plan for reopening beaches. The video would then be posted on social media and offered to every TV station in the state. I volunteer to write this speech. It will contain the phrase, “these are your alternatives to milling madness.”

That’s from his speech announcing Vortex I. I’ll happily rip off Tom McCall over and over again so we can get back on the Great Birthright and enjoy the free and uninterrupted use thereof. (That’s from the Beach Bill)

Class

Matt Love NSP Meditations

I arrived to work the other morning, well before my boss showed up. I like the stillness on the site at that time, being alone, getting things cleaned up and organized and prepped, so more skilled workmen can work better. The sun was out, the birds were calling and singing, and I got to work and my mind began to draft a new piece of writing about a young woman who needs health care.

An hour or so later, my boss showed up. I went out to his truck to greet him. We said hello and then he handed me a $100 bill and said something to the effect that it was a stimulus payment to his crew and he wasn’t trying to earn my vote. Well done sir!

Now I have worked many jobs over the course of my lifetime, but I had never received a cash bonus from a boss. It felt damn good. It was a class act and you just don’t see much class around these days. It’s a long lost American cultural art form buried deep in the ground with Fred Astaire and tipping the newspaper boy. Most Americans today prefer debasing people instead of exhibiting class. It gets much better ratings and gets The Debasers elected over and over again.

I will remember this simple act of class by my boss and try to enact one myself soon. And really, it doesn’t take money to enact class. But that’s nice too!

Corona Virus Thoughts #7

Matt Love Corona Virus Thoughts, NSP Meditations

The most pressing political question of the lockdown/reopening/quarantine is: why is a fudge shop open and not an elk viewing area? That strikes to the heart of the frustration many people have expressed about the inexplicable inconsistency of policy and enforcement. Had everything been more consistent or seemingly more commonsense, perhaps things wouldn’t have boiled over. I don’t know. I’m glad I didn’t have to make the decisions. It’s easy to second guess when nothing happens.

(As I write this from an OTA joint, two old men are debunking all the virus science and epidemiology. They just know as PHDs in the field do not. Public health officials are in conspiracy to ruin the economy, overthrow Trump and violate the Bill of Rights.)

Yes, fudge versus elk. What an existential dilemma!

People are on the road. You can feel the restlessness in the air.

If I hear the phrase “mainstream media” one more time in defense of an opinion I might kill someone.

I listened to Save Me Jesus Radio the other day as I often do on my drives around Oregon. The new party line is the conspiracy by liberals and secularists to prevent real Christians from practicing their true region in the company of others. What happened to reading the Bible in solitude and thinking about the stories and scriptures without someone telling you want to think? What about walking in nature and marveling at God’s avian creations without someone telling you human beings fly above birds? Why do so many Americans have the inability to stand being with themselves and their own thoughts for a limited amount of time? I have always wanted to write an alternate history of America where Walden was adopted as the nation’s holy book rather than the Bible. Maybe I will.

Cotton is an interesting verb and in complete disuse. As are reckon and fancy. I think they need to return to the vernacular.

A man just ordered a shot of Jack at high noon.

I’m reading a book called Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire by the novelist and social critic Kurt Andersen. It was published in 2017 and explains with perfect lucidity how Trump was elected and how three years later a conspiracy-themed public response to the lockdown took hold in many quarters of American society. His thesis is that we are a nation built by/on myth and fantasy by unique set of hucksters, fabulists, crackpots, pseudo clarinetists, charlatans, religious freaks. Think PT Barnum to Mary Baker Eddy to William Randolph Hearst to Col. Tom Parker to Hollywood to Ronald Reagan to a reality show star being elected to the nation’s highest office. I could go on, but why bother? Get the book. Challenge your orthodoxies. It certainly has mine with a few of his contentions, one of them that Thoreau was a complete poseur in Walden. I already knew this deep in my heart but I choose to believe his words. Sounds a lot like faith, doesn’t it? Oh Henry!

“Gimme Shelter” just came on the jukebox….it’s just a shot away, it’s just a shot away.

Panning During the Pandemic

Matt Love Corona Virus Thoughts, NSP Correspondents, Poetry

An old timer pans for gold during the pandemic.

He pans a coastal stream that carries flakes

down the watershed to gleam at the ocean’s edge.

A gold miner at dawn on the beach!

He’s got the gold bug!

Wishing for a strike!

Hope of hope to get into the money

and start singing:

We’re in the money/ we’re in the money

The classic show tune from The Gold Diggers,

sung by Ginger Rodgers with her golden smirk,

in the Depression, 1933, FDR Year 1,

a sunrise of a year in America.

Freedom from fear FDR promised.

He delivered.

Look what our President today promises

while he rakes in the gold

to decorate his boudoir.

He delivered as well.

Teacher of the Year: A Novella

By Matt Love

A reluctant teacher becomes advisor to a moribund high school newspaper. He meets the new editor, a dynamic 18-year-old senior, and together they begin a unique creative collaboration that revives the publication and slowly slides into gray areas. As the poet Octavio Paz wrote, “To realize itself, love must violate the rules of our world...committed by two stars that break out of the conception of love, which implies breaking away and a catastrophe..."

Teacher of the Year
Amazon's Kindle Edition $6.99

Teacher of the Year unfolds in an energetic mixture of epistle, stream-of-consciousness, narrative and meditations on the craft and alchemy of teaching. There is no other more authentic literary exploration into the agonies and ecstasies of teaching in the annals of American literature than this novella.

A Substantial but Incomplete Autobiography in Poems

By Matt Love

In perhaps the largest, most eclectic volume of previously unpublished poetry in the history of Pacific Northwest literature, Matt Love presents 148 poems written over a 30-year span.

As he writes in the introduction to A Substantial but Incomplete Autobiography in Poems, “I have organized this collection into six categories: Ocean, Love, My Life, Oregon Tavern Age, Homelessness, Probation. These poems serve as a substantial but incomplete autobiography.”

“Confessionals, odes, scatological doggerel, polemics, tankas, haiku, prose, psalms, requiems, observations, love letters, lamentations, lyrics, stream of consciousness, meditations, lists, riffs, a eulogy, a sermon, a commencement speech, found poetry, tributes, elegies. I threw it all into an ancient cement mixer and hand cranked that concrete beast while watching blue herons undulate overhead and drinking red wine as the husky snoozed in his dirt fort. The result: A Substantial but Incomplete Autobiography in Poems, something merging where Charles Bukowski, Richard Hugo, Mary Oliver and Liz Phair blend together.”

None of Love's poems were ever submitted to poetry journals, contests or magazines, making this collection a true renegade project of passion and readable to any denizen of a coastal dive bar.
