Elbow Patches!

Matt Love NSP Meditations

The other day I hunted through a Christian thrift store and found one of my more memorable treasures: Elbow Patches! “Genuine Sueded (sic) Cowhide.” It cost me a quarter.

Look at the groovy line illustration of the man wearing patches on his blazer! Look at the price! Look at the perforations for “easy sewing! These patches scream scholar, writer, beatnik, history teacher, poet, brooding intellectual, revolutionary!

Why can’t we again be a nation of people who sew patches to “add new life and fashion to jackets, sweaters, coats?”

I have just the ancient and fraying Pendleton sweater that is perfect for these patches.

The only problem—I can’t sew! Help me!

Corona Virus Thoughts #9

Matt Love Corona Virus Thoughts, NSP Meditations

I am trying not to write about current political events because it undermines my soul when I do. I considered writing a polemic titled “The New American Dick,” about the young white men I see defying the mask order in indoor public places. They are self assured, stupid-looking, smug, spoiling for confrontation and endangering others, particularly those working the front lines and ringing up their shitty food purchases. It is the height of arrogance and narcissism and…okay I wasn’t going to write that polemic.

The writing these days feels almost useless. Writing doesn’t change anyone’s mind anymore. Did it ever? Can anyone reading this cite a recent example of changing one’s mind after reading something? It feels like everything people read these days, at least as far as nonfiction goes, exists merely to confirm bias. Of course, when press released from the White House are totally fictional, who knows what to make of anything. I just wrote that and it didn’t make sense to me. But why try to edit it?

About the only thing making any sense to me these days is my friendship with chipmunks.

I’m reading Nelson Algren’s The Man with the Golden Arm. I can’t say it’s holding up very well, but he was taking a run at the urban miscreant underclass during his heyday. The subject I would love to take on is the rural miscreant underclass of today. It’s all around me. Maybe that book would matter and change peoples’ minds.

One wonders if the President would admit the Corona Virus is something to take serious if he was just about ready to give up the ghost after contracting it?

No. He’d blame Obama for poisoning him.

More people on the move cross my path. They seem like they have no idea why they are moving.

Almost everyone I know outside my family doesn’t return phone calls.

I have exactly one pressing priority—shave.

Secret Coast Radio #22

Matt Love NSP Meditations, secret coast radio oregon podcast

Welcome to the Secret Coast Radio podcast broadcasting somewhere on the Secret Coast

Let us begin by saying:

We prefer the first person plural over the singular.

We prefer mystery over journalism.

We prefer the milk of human kindness over milk and drinking scotch over scotching ideas.

We prefer books over tweets, sashaying over plodding, soothsaying over subterfuge.

We prefer lakes over listlessness, naps over nitpicking and toppling live dictators over toppling the statues of dead dictators.

We prefer drinking rose on the lawn over squirting herbicide on the lawn. Weeds are fun and attract bees!

We prefer artists who paint beavers on beaverwood over artists who paint beavers on canvas.

We prefer barbecuing egg plant over barbecuing animal flesh.

We prefer believing in the wonder of the stars and oceans over wondering if eating wafers and drinking grape juice has any spiritual significance.

We prefer playing the harmonica over courting disharmony, delighting others over debasing them.

What is this podcast about? Who are we?

Like we said, mystery over journalism.

Let show number 22 begin.

Some Suggested New Names for RVs in Contemporary America

Matt Love NSP Meditations

In recent years, I have developed the curious hobby of compiling the interesting and arresting names of RVs I see rambling up and down Highway 101.

The names from the 70s and 80s are easily the most memorable. (Vixen and Ambassador are two favorite.)

The names for the newer models suck: Attitude, Ultra Maxx, Super Lite, Vegas, Era (era?).

Somewhere along the way, RV names stopped being existentially-themed and became banal or stupidly contrived with misspellings to boot.

Think The Seeker or The Defender from the 1970s versus Nite Hawk today.

Why the change? I don’t know but there is a novel in the change. It also probably has something to do with the dumbing down and branding up of Americans.

During the American Apocalypse currently unfolding, I have taken to inventing new names for RVs that might better reflect our strange times and suggest a fresh way of existential thinking for the millions of Americans gripped by panic, resignation, defiance, insanity, and anger and moved to buy RVs in record numbers.

Here they are:

The Shitshow Express

Kiss my Ass

Wastin’ Away in Shitsville

Take this Country and Shove It

Fourth of July Frivolous Word Frenzy

Matt Love NSP Meditations, Poetry

Perhaps there is frivolity, a fancy-pants festooned feverish feeling in fortifying myself during the pandemic by building driftwood forts.

But I feel fortified and formidable when doing so while the First Furry Felonious Ferret Fiend fornicates up our fake, fatuous, facile, forlorn, freaked, Funhouse of a country. Land of the folderol and home of the feckless fools in untucked shirts.

Can we bring back the word fusspot?

If only a real fakir ran this unfortunate show. How fabulous and far out! He or she or the furry-antlered elk might finalize our flimsy, futile, fractured, flim flam fate as a nation. It is time we are exposed as a a fantastic failure, a fart in the flaming wind, while the brontosaurs hi-fives us a fat middle finger that will enrage the flat earth viewers of Fox News.

Fourth of July poem over. Finis. Finished.

Oh fuck, I forgot to use fetch, finagle, famish, fork and febrile in this poem.

Fourth of July Corona Virus Thoughts

Matt Love Corona Virus Thoughts, NSP Meditations

I rambled the beach at an extreme low tide on the morning of Fourth of July. I admired sea stars and mussels. I stopped in one of my forts and made a phone call to a dear friend. I visited another fort and read the strange nonsense someone had written on the wood.

On my way home I begin to think about my country and the spectacle the President staged at Mt. Rushmore last night. I didn’t watch a second of, nor will I ever. I never thought I would live to see the day when a tinpot dictator held the highest office in the land. It all seems to be collapsing around him in disorder and death.

I got into it with a neighbor the other day. He described the mask order as Nazi. He said it was all a hoax and the flu. I rebutted this and that and then walked away. If gravity aided the Democrats, he would say gravity was a hoax and believe it. Consider this: many French reactionaries welcomed the Nazis invasion of their country. The Vichy government and all that. This time feels like that to me, a Vichy sort of government in place that rallies the fanatics with fear and hate and debasement. The old fascist playbook. It’s never changed. It never will. Consider this: there were many Germans who still believed in Hitler after it all ended. We have those kind of Americans today.

Last night I watched a movie about football and one of the extras was someone named Jack Snow, which I think is about the best male name I have ever heard. It occurred to me that I once owned the football card of Jack Snow. He was on my All-Name team, a group of players with the best football names, such as Dick Butkus and Jack Ham and Sonny Sixkiller.

As I was walking back home from the beach, I came across a dilapidated red sedan parked in front of a grange hall. The sedan was covered in moss and duct tape. The tags were expired from years ago. A young man was sleeping in the driver’s seat because the back seat was filled with shit. The man wore a black hoodie and his mouth was wide open as he slept. He face was scarred and hollow.

This scene struck me as precisely the image of America’s body politic.

The swallows soared overhead as I passed the sedan. They didn’t care about anything but flying.

I hope I don’t hear a single firecracker tonight, but I will.

Teacher of the Year: A Novella

By Matt Love

A reluctant teacher becomes advisor to a moribund high school newspaper. He meets the new editor, a dynamic 18-year-old senior, and together they begin a unique creative collaboration that revives the publication and slowly slides into gray areas. As the poet Octavio Paz wrote, “To realize itself, love must violate the rules of our world...committed by two stars that break out of the conception of love, which implies breaking away and a catastrophe..."

Teacher of the Year
Amazon's Kindle Edition $6.99

Teacher of the Year unfolds in an energetic mixture of epistle, stream-of-consciousness, narrative and meditations on the craft and alchemy of teaching. There is no other more authentic literary exploration into the agonies and ecstasies of teaching in the annals of American literature than this novella.

A Substantial but Incomplete Autobiography in Poems

By Matt Love

In perhaps the largest, most eclectic volume of previously unpublished poetry in the history of Pacific Northwest literature, Matt Love presents 148 poems written over a 30-year span.

As he writes in the introduction to A Substantial but Incomplete Autobiography in Poems, “I have organized this collection into six categories: Ocean, Love, My Life, Oregon Tavern Age, Homelessness, Probation. These poems serve as a substantial but incomplete autobiography.”

“Confessionals, odes, scatological doggerel, polemics, tankas, haiku, prose, psalms, requiems, observations, love letters, lamentations, lyrics, stream of consciousness, meditations, lists, riffs, a eulogy, a sermon, a commencement speech, found poetry, tributes, elegies. I threw it all into an ancient cement mixer and hand cranked that concrete beast while watching blue herons undulate overhead and drinking red wine as the husky snoozed in his dirt fort. The result: A Substantial but Incomplete Autobiography in Poems, something merging where Charles Bukowski, Richard Hugo, Mary Oliver and Liz Phair blend together.”

None of Love's poems were ever submitted to poetry journals, contests or magazines, making this collection a true renegade project of passion and readable to any denizen of a coastal dive bar.
