Watching Wimbledon

Matt Love NSP Meditations, Sports

I hadn’t watched a Wimbledon match in years. But one was airing on television in the morning, and Perry Mason wasn’t, so why not?

It was a men’s fourth round match and pretty thrilling, although almost entirely from the baseline. No one plays serve and volley anymore and that is a great loss for tennis of both genders. It gets kind of boring watching all the booming ground strokes. It’s so much more exciting to see players at the net and opponents trying to execute passing shots.

Oh well, I miss the Green Bay Packers’ “run to daylight” too.

Nevertheless, I was entertained and then something struck me as odd: the fact that Wimbledon still uses people to officiate shots and serves and some serves in the men’s game often reach 130 mph!

But there they were, some men and women clearly in their 50s, 60s and perhaps even 70s, many wearing glasses (!) calling the lines while standing behind or to the side of players. It all seemed so quaint and absurd, especially since they have a super fancy computerized system to overcome erroneous calls! Why not just use the system the whole time and have a noise sound in or out?

I made this comment to my dad, who was watching with me, and he was adamant that human beings remain on a tennis court calling lines. No more computers! Retain the human element even though it is routinely overruled by computers.

I wasn’t really sure what I thought on the issue. I know there is considerable talk about removing home plate umpires with robots in Major League baseball because of their wildly inconsistent and totally arbitrary strike zones. (In fact, there is a pilot project to test robot umpires in one of the minor leagues.)

A robot home plate umpire! No more arguments with the batters or hitters or managers! Who throws out the pitcher when he purposely throws at a hitter in one of those retaliatory stupidities in baseball?

And speaking of robots…what about having one replace the ball boys and ball girls at Wimbledon, the ones that frequently get smashed in the face by balls or trip and tear a tendon?

Of course, if ball boys and ball girls are replaced, who tosses the balls to the servers? Maybe a robot could do that, too. Of course they could!

What a strange thing it would be to watch robot judges and lackeys interact with human beings in sporting events.

Satan’s Halftime (A Story Idea)

Matt Love NSP Meditations, Sports

In light of the recent Kennedy vs Bremerton School District Supreme Court decision that now allows public school coaches/teachers to engage in Christian prayer with their students/athletes while on the job, I have an idea for a short story or film. It goes something like this:

Since the decision allows proselytizing by public employees of any religion, a firebrand liberal and atheist social studies teacher and football coach working at Grants Pass High School (mascot Cavemen) decides he wants to call attention to the blatant violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment by practicing Satanism with his players in precisely the same manner as the coach in Bremerton did—pray at the 50-yard line of a football field after games.

In a bit of delicious and hellacious irony, the Cavemen open their season at home against a Eugene Catholic high school, Marist (mascot Flagelators). Oh, the press will eat that up! So will the Catholics on the Supreme Court! They love seeing public school teachers practicing religious freedom on the public’s dime.

The coach recruits a dozen or so players to join him in worshiping Satan after the game. He doesn’t tell them its a comic protest. They think it’s the real deal. It was easy to recruit them. They love Satan and they love their coach and teacher. His word is gospel. He is the most inspiring teacher at Cave Junction High School! And Satan is their dark lord and master. They’d run through brick walls for Beelzebub!

The Cavemen blow away Marist, 66-6.

After the victory, the coach leads some of his players to the 50-yard line. They kneel around him, take off their helmets, bow their heads, and form devil’s horns with their hands. A couple of cheerleaders join them, too.

Parents and school officials don’t know what is going on. They gather around to find out. One parent decides to film the moment.

The coach prays: We prostrate before you Master Satan and promise our eternal fealty for delivering this great victory against the followers of Christ—that false prophet also known as Jesus.

We long to live and serve you in the fiery furnace of Hades, and luxuriate in sin and wickedness.

Oh thank you Dark Lord! And help us defeat the Tillamook Cheesemakers next week.

All hell breaks loose. There is murder in the hearts of the parents and school officials. But, hey it’s Constitutionally protected free speech! Thank you Supreme Court!

An hour later, the YouTube video has garnered ten million hits and thousands of public school teachers around the country decide they want to adopt Satanism as their religion and freely and lawfully practice it on the job with their students.

Okay, I’m still working on this idea, but I like how it’s going so far. (Note to self: I need to work in Deviled Ham Spread finger sandwiches into the story. Maybe the coach has his player take them like communion at the 50-yard line.)

OLD-GROWTH MURDER

Matt Love NSP Meditations French bicyclist, matt love, Old Growth Murder, Oregon Coast, Oregon film, Oregon murder, Tom Olsen, true crime documentary

Friends of Oregon Stories:

My good friend Tom Olsen has made an incredible true crime film documentary called OLD-GROWTH MURDER, about a decades-long unsolved homicide of a French bicyclist in Neskowin, Oregon. I first came across this story in 1997 when I moved to the area to teach at Neskowin Valley School and it has intrigued me ever since. Let’s hope the release of the film will spur new leads, new people coming forward, a new investigation, and some justice for the victim and his family.

More information on the film below:

Anchor Pictures in conjunction with Gravitas Ventures are pleased to announce the release of OLD-GROWTH MURDER, a feature-length documentary exploring the 1987 cold case murder of Alain Malessard. The director, Tom Olsen, Jr., has been investigating and producing the project since 2011. The film is available through Apple iTunes beginning June 28, 2022. With additional streaming opportunities this Summer.

On Thanksgiving Day 1987, residents of Neskowin, a small town on the North Oregon Coast, discovered the murdered body of 26-year-old Alain Malessard, a French citizen, in a closed, U.S. Forest Service campground. He was bicycling across North America, fulfilling a lifelong dream. An investigation ensued, suspects were identified, but no one was ever charged. The story of the murder gradually disappeared.

OLD-GROWTH MURDER retraces Malessard’s five-month journey across Canada and the Pacific Northwest, interviewing a number of family friends and multiple Oregon law enforcement authorities that handled the yearlong investigation.

The film weaves together extensive interviews with previously unseen crime scene material, family photos, home movies, and a decade worth of investigative artifacts that help propel the complex police procedural.

Although the investigation remains officially open, the film’s audience will surely wonder why with today’s advanced forensics, digital investigative tools, DNA testing, and almost monthly headlines of decades-old unsolved homicide cases being closed, this murder is still unsolved in 2022

Frank Beavers Endorsement from Tom McCall

Matt Love NSP Meditations, Oregon Coast_History

I have refrained from making political endorsements related to candidates running for various Oregon offices, because, well, I’m dead. Since 1983 to be exact.

But I simply couldn’t stand spinning in my Redmond grave any longer after the recent Republican gubernatorial primary. The final straws were television ads showing a swinging Sandy mayor boast his two daughters (appearing in the ad with him) would never compete in sports with trans athletes and another ad showing a female candidate attacking a female opponent because the opponent had supported the installation of tampon machines inside boys bathrooms.

That was all I could stand so I have somewhat resurrected and heartily endorse independent Frank Beavers for Governor of Oregon. He is the right candidate for the job. He’s not bought and paid for by big timber, Phil Knight or the unions. He’s not insane or deluded. He accepts gravity as a scientific principle. He is truly a lover of the outdoors and loves sculpting beautiful and mesmerizing pieces of wooden art. Yes, we need an artist as chief executive!

Frank Beavers is also the hardest working citizen of Oregon I have ever seen. He never stops working to better himself, his family, community and watershed. He is easily the most ecologically and spiritually attune person I’ve had the privilege of meeting. (We met in a shared dream and drank beer together.)

Yes, Frank Beavers for Governor. He’s very much the candidate we need to heal the dangerous divisions in Oregon. He won’t do it with talk because he doesn’t say a whole lot. He gets things done! He is a creature of ACTION!

Cast your ballot for Frank. Elect him Governor and let me rest in peace goddammit!

A Brief Meditation on the End of Roe

Matt Love NSP Meditations

The news arrived yesterday that the Supreme Court overturned Roe V Wade by a 6-3 vote and I thought about what that meant to my country. As of this writing, I have no idea. I do know from my long study of American history that massive unforeseen backlashes with terrible consequences occasionally result with momentous changes. Think the election of Barack Obama = election of Donald Trump. End of Reconstruction = resurgence of the KKK. So what will be the unexpected backlash to the Right with this decision? There will be one. I don’t think anyone can predict it yet.

It almost feels beyond comprehension to realize the sequence of historical events the past decade or so: the election of a Black man as President; legalization of gay marriage; legalization of cannabis (in many states); the 2020 summer protests; catastrophic homelessness; a Supreme Court ruling that declared corporations are people; the rise of mass shootings; the election of Donald Trump; the exponential growth and disease of social media; an attempted coup; two impeachment trials; a Pandemic; cataclysmic forest fires, including the one that almost burned down Estacada.

I don’t know where we are headed as a nation, but it seems we’re on the precipice of permanent division. Just think of all the celebratory sermons from the pulpits Sunday morning and the giddy potlucks with casseroles to follow.

And my writing seems increasingly more irrelevant to anything but keeping my creative mind active.

Teacher of the Year: A Novella

By Matt Love

A reluctant teacher becomes advisor to a moribund high school newspaper. He meets the new editor, a dynamic 18-year-old senior, and together they begin a unique creative collaboration that revives the publication and slowly slides into gray areas. As the poet Octavio Paz wrote, “To realize itself, love must violate the rules of our world...committed by two stars that break out of the conception of love, which implies breaking away and a catastrophe..."

Teacher of the Year
Amazon's Kindle Edition $6.99

Teacher of the Year unfolds in an energetic mixture of epistle, stream-of-consciousness, narrative and meditations on the craft and alchemy of teaching. There is no other more authentic literary exploration into the agonies and ecstasies of teaching in the annals of American literature than this novella.

A Substantial but Incomplete Autobiography in Poems

By Matt Love

In perhaps the largest, most eclectic volume of previously unpublished poetry in the history of Pacific Northwest literature, Matt Love presents 148 poems written over a 30-year span.

As he writes in the introduction to A Substantial but Incomplete Autobiography in Poems, “I have organized this collection into six categories: Ocean, Love, My Life, Oregon Tavern Age, Homelessness, Probation. These poems serve as a substantial but incomplete autobiography.”

“Confessionals, odes, scatological doggerel, polemics, tankas, haiku, prose, psalms, requiems, observations, love letters, lamentations, lyrics, stream of consciousness, meditations, lists, riffs, a eulogy, a sermon, a commencement speech, found poetry, tributes, elegies. I threw it all into an ancient cement mixer and hand cranked that concrete beast while watching blue herons undulate overhead and drinking red wine as the husky snoozed in his dirt fort. The result: A Substantial but Incomplete Autobiography in Poems, something merging where Charles Bukowski, Richard Hugo, Mary Oliver and Liz Phair blend together.”

None of Love's poems were ever submitted to poetry journals, contests or magazines, making this collection a true renegade project of passion and readable to any denizen of a coastal dive bar.
